Viking longships are said to be one of the most wellknown ships of the Viking era. These longsips were created like a big canoe that thin, long and sat low in the water. The prow and stern of the ship had savage animals carved into them which were covered in a layer of gold and silver which shinned when the sun was out. When the ship was entering a port the men would go to the sides with their sheilds and cover the sides of the ship with them. The shields were then taken down once they went bck out to sea. These longships had one large sail in the middle of the boat that was stripped either blue, red or green.

Merchant ships were used bu merchants and warriors who need to sail for a short period of time. These ships needed to be easy to manuver and navigate to go through rough seas and rivers. These ships were light so that they could get pulled ashore at the ports. These merchant ships were mainly sailing ships but could be rowed in rough seas. Merchant ships were small and so weren't used as mush as the Longships.
